About to marry
or just married? As a recently married or about to be married
female legal resident of the United States or American citizen
you probably possess a Social Security number and card.
Whether needing to apply for the first Social Security number
and card or already having been assigned a number and card,
a newly married woman will need to notify Social Security
of her new last name or her intention to keep her current
legal last name, although married.
Once a new wife's
marriage license is filed and recorded, the name change
notification process can begin. Social Security is not "automatically"
notified by any state entity as to a person's recent marriage.
Likewise, Social Security does not know, nor do they "automatically"
notify any woman who has recently gone from Miss or Ms to
Mrs.! There is not an "automatic" amending of
any governmental records - it is the responsibility of the
one who has changed her marital status to secure the legal
recognition of her new marital status and last name or names.
Finally, once
Social Security is notified by a recently married woman
and the legal name changed to reflect the new married name,
there is still much more for the bride to do. Social Security
is only one of the many entities to be notified of a marriage.
Oh, watch out for groups claiming to contact you on behalf
of Social Security, offering to notify Social Security for
you! Be safe by considering the whole process of legal last
name change notification and the help provided by The Name
