About to marry
or just married? As a recently married or about to be married
female legal resident of the United States or American citizen
you probably possess a Social Security number and card.
Whether needing to apply for the first Social Security number
and card or already having been assigned a number and card,
a newly married woman will need to notify Social Security
of her new last name or her intention to keep her current
legal last name, although married.
Once a new wife's
marriage license is filed and recorded, the name change
notification process can begin. Social Security is not "automatically"
